Fly Trap help

Short answers for setup and everyday use. Everything here also works in the demo, except bank linking and the companion.

Getting started

  • Create an account from Get started and confirm your email. During the private beta you'll be asked for an invite code.
  • First-run setup asks for one rule (you can change it anytime) and, optionally, the websites you might want to pause.
  • Add a purchase by hand, or import a CSV. Bank linking is optional.

Importing a CSV

  • Download transactions as CSV from your bank or card website (up to 2 MB and 5,000 rows per file).
  • Fly Trap guesses the columns; check them in the preview. Tell it whether spending appears as negative or positive numbers.
  • If dates could be month-first or day-first, you'll be asked to choose rather than have Fly Trap guess.
  • Rows it can't read are listed with the reason. Pending rows are skipped; import them again after they post.
  • Importing the same or an overlapping file again skips rows you already have, so totals don't double.

Understanding flags

  • Clear match: the merchant is on your list or is a dessert shop or delivery app.
  • Possible: the evidence is indirect (a coffee chain, a plain Uber charge, a name with “bakery”). Only you know what it was.
  • Refunds, credits, transfers, card payments and fees never count as rule breaks. Grocery stores never trigger the dessert rule.
  • For date-only records over your daily limit, every purchase that day is up for review because the order isn't known.
  • If a purchase's amount, merchant or date changes after you decide, it comes back for review.

Bank linking

Optional read-only bank linking through Plaid is in testing and not yet available for real bank accounts.

  • Linking opens Plaid's secure window; you sign in to your bank there, not in Fly Trap.
  • The first import can take a few minutes. Later updates arrive when your bank reports them, so recent purchases may be delayed.
  • “Needs attention” usually means your bank wants you to sign in again. Use “Fix connection”; your history stays.
  • Bank transactions go to your review queue like any other purchase. A bank match alone never starts a pause.
  • “Disconnect” revokes Fly Trap's access with Plaid and deletes that bank's accounts and transactions from Fly Trap.

Browser companion

  • The companion is a Chrome extension (it also runs in Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers). During the beta it's installed from a download.
  • Install: download and unzip it, open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, choose “Load unpacked” and select the unzipped folder.
  • Pair it: in Fly Trap open Pause → Browser companion → “Get a pairing code”, then type the code into the companion's popup within 10 minutes.
  • It covers only that browser profile. Other browsers, other devices, apps, private windows (unless allowed), or removing the extension aren't covered.
  • You can see paired browsers and revoke any of them in Pause. A revoked companion clears its blocks.

Pauses and emergency release

  • A pause lasts exactly 24 hours from when you confirmed the catch and ends on its own, even if the app is closed or offline.
  • It covers the websites you had chosen at that moment, plus their subdomains. Bank sites, Plaid and Fly Trap itself can never be paused.
  • Only one pause runs at a time. Confirming another catch during a pause records the catch without extending anything.
  • Emergency release ends a pause early; you'll be asked for a short reason that's kept in your history. The companion unblocks within about a minute.

Export and deletion

  • Account → Download my data gives a JSON file with everything stored for you and a CSV of your purchases.
  • Account → Delete account revokes linked banks and paired browsers, then removes your data and login. See details.
